One of the best amateur drama groups in the country with a reputation for high quality performances. An amateur group founded in 1934,and based in the Abbey Theatre, the Company has grown to a membership of over 400. There are four thriving youth groups: the Company of Teens, The Company of Ten, St Albans Music Theatre and Theatrix Drama School.
New members are always welcome.
Company of Ten is open to members from 14 years, and presents ten productions each season. Company of Teens ('CoTeens') meets every Thursday evening during term time, and is open to anyone 14 - 19 years, although sometimes there's a waiting list. We have to limit numbers because of size of venue and supervision requirements. Varied programme of activities, usually including one CoTeens production each season, but members of Teens also belong to the Company of Ten, and can audition for suitable parts in the main season. The same membership fee covers both CoTen and CoTeens!
St Albans Youth Music Theatre meets every Saturday afternoon from September - Easter, to rehearse a specific musical production, presented at the Abbey Theatre during the Easter holidays. Open to anyone 10 - 19 years, this group has a degree of autonomy from CoTen (chooses its own productions and directors), but is very much a part of the youth side of the theatre. For under 14s, parents have to join CoTen, but 14 & over join in their own right.
Theatrix is an independent drama school, operating 6 days a week from the Abbey Theatre. Many Theatrix students have appeared in CoTen productions, but all enquiries about drama classes should go to Theatrix.
Directors are chosen from the membership and casting is by audition to ensure that newcomers are given every opportunity to participate as soon as they join. New backstage crew members are invited for work on sound and lighting, set construction, costume design and as stage managers.
Our building has full disabled access for audience (disabled parking, ramp to front doors, disabled access toilet, wheelchair seating, infra-red hearing system), and we operate a policy to facilitate any disabled performer by arrangement, wherever possible. We hope to add audio-described performances in the forthcoming season.
